This October, VeraCore hosted a charity walk-a-thon as part of its employee wellness program, Core Wellness. The walk-a-thon was both an opportunity for VeraCore to reconnect team members in a healthy way while giving back to the community.
At VeraCore, we value a collaborative, fun working environment. In early March, our work environment changed dramatically when the pandemic hit and we transitioned to a work-from-home environment.
The pandemic had a significant impact on VeraCore teams working together. Although we are fortunate enough to be able to work from home, the transition limited in-person interaction as teams began to work solely over Slack and Zoom. Days turned into weeks, and our teams began to feel more isolated and anxious over the “new working norm” brought on by the pandemic.
Tasked with a physical distancing challenge, VeraCore’s management team began to brainstorm fun and safe ideas on how they could get our team members outside and interacting again.
Living in New England, we were inspired by the fall foliage surrounding us this time of year. We decided enjoying the fall season by walking outside was a great way to get together while staying physically distant.
In addition to getting teams reconnected, VeraCore also wanted to give back to the community during a real time of need. It’s hard not to see the struggles caused by the pandemic for many individuals and families across Connecticut. As a company, we are aware how fortunate we are to be able to work from home when others may not have the same opportunity. With physical distancing restrictions in mind, VeraCore opted to host their own walk-a-thon event, donating their time and money to helping Foodshare and their fight against hunger in Connecticut.
Forty VeraCore employees participated, breaking out into smaller groups of five to eight. Each team was driven by a company goal to walk at least three miles on their outings. From Rocky Hill to Collinsville, CT, teams ventured out to their favorite park, hiking trail, or scenic area and got moving! At the end of the week, VeraCore walked over 300,000 steps, 130 Miles and raised $2,500 for Foodshare!
Foodshare is the largest anti-hunger organization in the Greater Hartford area, serving Hartford and Tolland counties. Each year, the food bank collects and distributes nearly 12 million meals worth of food through a network of more than 260 food pantries, meal programs, and Mobile Foodshare sites.
The walk-a-thon was a great way to get our teams reconnected while staying healthy and giving back! Our team members left the event feeling excited as they reconnected again and supported a good cause while doing it!
Be on the lookout for more VeraCore Core Wellness events as we continue to give back to our community and stay fit as a team!
